Michigan Boaters Enjoy The Start Of The Season Despite Gas Prices
The Detroit Free Press reports on the beginning of boat season in Michigan.
According to the story, gas prices are not slowing down boaters on the Great Lakes, or on the 11,000 inland lakes.

The World’s Two Largest Marine Retailers Present Great American Boat Sale May 30 – June 15
MarineMax and Bass Pro Shops recently announced The Great American Boat Sale, starting May 30th till June 15th.
According to Marine Max and Bass Pro Shops...
When the going gets tough, the tough go boating. That’s what we here at MarineMax and Bass Pro Shops believe. In these stressful economic times, one simple fact remains, boating is and always will be the best way to escape stress and spend quality time with your family. Now, more than ever, is the best time to get on the water.
Unprecedented Economic Times Mean Unprecedented Deals
Bass Pro Shops and MarineMax are the largest and strongest boating retailers in the world, we both stocked up heavy with new boats last fall and winter to get ready for the big push this spring… but let’s be frank, this economic downturn surprised everyone, including us, in its severity. So… we have great boats in stock. All kinds of boats. In fact, so many boats that we are taking extraordinary steps to give boat buyers the best deals to be found anywhere.
Glenn Sandridge, Vice-President of Marketing at MarineMax explains, “We have a lot of boats in stock. But it’s such a great time to go boating. The weather is great. The kids are out of school. And what a bonding experience, no cell phones and no distractions – unless sunsets count. We need to find a way to get more families out on the water and get them away from everyday worries.
“I knew if we held a nationwide sale that would help, and if we offered to sell our new and used sport boats, cruisers, fishing boats and even sport yachts at tremendous value prices, that would probably do the trick. So, that’s exactly what we’re going to do.
“Sure,” continued Sandridge, “selling boats at these prices with so many special offers this time of year is unusual. But this is THE time to go boating. This is your chance to get Sea Rays and other brands at terrific prices and still have the whole summer to enjoy them. We knew it would take great deals to move these boats now, and we’ve got them available at these sales.”
This is your opportunity to save big money on your dream boat:
McGill continued, “All customers receive a professional Captain’s Delivery and orientation to feel confident and comfortable operating their boat, whether they are first time boaters or moving up to a larger boat.” It all adds up to a total experience you can’t find anywhere else.
Sales managers have been instructed to move all new and used boats. Financing and insurance are available on the spot on approved credit… they’ll make it quick and easy for anyone who’s in the market for a good boat to get one at this sale.
Events are being held all over the country, some at Bass Pro Shops locations, some in large parking lots but all with one thing in common. Unprecedented deals on an unbeatable inventory of great boats.

How To Break-In Your New Boat Engine
Have you bought a new boat engine for the upcoming boating season? Before starting up your new engine, check out the Mercury Service blog entry on the importance of engine break-in.According to the Mercury Service blog...
Engine break-in is performed to manipulate certain surfaces within the engine. Even with current machining processes, there may still be some irregularities on machined and honed surfaces. The break-in process allows the engine to wear down the high spots of these irregularities, providing a smoother surface before the engine experiences the rigors of normal use. The main areas of break-in focus are the cylinder walls, cam lobes, clutch engagement surfaces, and gear engagement surfaces. Engine break-in also helps seat the piston rings and helps to maintain tighter tolerances and better lubrication of moving parts, prolonging engine life.

Manufacturers Help Dealerships Become Certified
By Thom Dammrich
In light of growing concern over slumping sales and consumer confidence, marine companies are tightening their belts in order to weather the storm of economic malaise. This news isn’t surprising, as businesses are often faced with hard decisions and cost-cutting measures when times get tough and people aren’t buying they way they used to.
However, despite the apparent need to cut costs wherever possible, there’s one area dealerships really can’t afford to scale back: Customer satisfaction. In fact, there is no better time to get prepared and take maximum advantage when business conditions improve. And, there’s no better way for dealers to prepare for prosperity than by completing Marine Industry Dealership Certification.
As I explained in this very column back in March, satisfying increasingly demanding consumers is the number-one priority of U.S. retailers in 2008, based on results of a survey released by International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) and the National Retail Federation. Consumers may, indeed, have a bit less disposable income to spend in 2008 compared to what they earmarked the previous few years, but that doesn’t means they’re willing to compromise the level of quality and service they’ve grown accustomed to expecting.
This desire to consume “only the best” goods and services underscores the need for dealerships to continue pursuit of Marine Industry Certification, even in economically challenging times. Being labeled a “certified” dealership is a major advantage in today’s marketplace; it clearly sets your business apart from its surrounding competition and identifies you as special. It tells consumers you care about them!
It’s important for dealers to know that they’re not alone in this pursuit of excellence; boat manufacturers across all segments of the industry are stepping up to the plate (and have been for years) to make it more convenient and affordable for members of their retail networks to become Marine Industry Certified. Manufacturers recognize the value of Marine Industry Certification to their dealers, to their customers and to the manufacturer’s own success. And because they view the program as so critical to a dealerships’ ultimate success, boat manufacturers are doing their part to help dealers not only afford to participate, but actually incentivise them to enroll in the program.
At present, a total of 25 boat brands and two state Marine Trades Associations—the Marine Trade Association of Metropolitan Atlanta (MTAMA) and the Southern California Marine Association (SCMA)—have formal programs in place that offer dealerships both financial assistance and future incentives (financial and otherwise) to participate in Marine Industry Dealership Certification.
Specific details and incentives vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, but the underlying principal is the same: Manufacturers and MTAs want to make it easier for dealerships to get certified, and they’re willing to put their money where their mouth is. Actions really do speak louder than words, and these 27 organizations are leading the charge.
Many boat manufacturers already offer or are presently considering incentives for their dealer networks to become Marine Industry Certified. I encourage you to ask your manufacturers about what they’re doing to help dealers become certified. A complete list of manufacturers and MTAs that currently offer support for the Marine Industry Dealership Certification program is available on GrowBoating.org.
To date, a total of 612 dealerships have enrolled in the Marine Industry Dealership Certification program, 389 of which have completed the process and earned the official “Marine Industry Certified” designation. If that doesn’t sound like a lot to you, take a look at Boating Industry magazine’s “2008 Dealer Directory” in its May 2008 issue. Nearly every page has a Marine Industry Certified Dealership highlighted, and most pages have several.
Don’t waste this year; get Marine Industry Certified and be prepared to take market share when the good times return!
For additional information about the Marine Industry Dealership Certification program or specific details regarding how to enroll, contact Dealer Certification program manager John Warnik at (312) 946-6500; jwarnik@DealerCertification.org.

Marine Retailers Association of America Asks For Support Of The Clean Boating Act of 2008
The Marine Retailers Association of America recently issued a press release asking their members to contact their U.S. senators about supporting the Clean Boating Act of 2008 (S.2766).
According to the Marine Retailers Association of America, the Senate bill would permanently, immediately and fully restore the permit exemption and expands the definition of a recreational vessel to include small charter fishing boats.
It also includes a section that would allow the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Coast Guard to review whether certain incidental discharges from recreational boats should have some sort of best-management practices. It outlines a three-year process to determine some rules, though a permit would not be part of it.
MRAA is urging action because September deadline is quickly approaching, considering Congress breaks for Memorial Day and an August recess.
In 1973, the EPA recognized it would be unnecessary for recreational boaters to adhere to complex federal and state permitting requirements designed for large point source polluters such as waste water treatment plants, cruise ships, cargo ships, and supertankers. Therefore, recreational boats received a common sense exemption.
However, in September 2006, a U.S. District Court ruling nullified the EPA regulation and said the EPA did not have statutory authority to issue the exemption. The MRAA says it’s a major blow to recreational boating because incidental discharges, such as engine cooling water, gray water, uncontaminated bilge water, and weather related deck runoff would be prohibited without a new costly permit and non-compliance would be subject to a fine of up to $32,000.00 a day.
Other industry organizations, including the NMMA and BoatU.S., also have been lobbying their members to take similar action.
The bill has a Sept 30 deadline for passage, otherwise a requirement that recreational boats have permits for discharge will go into effect.
As of May 9, the bill has 30 co-sponsors, in addition to its original sponsor Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida,. It would still need to go to the U.S. House of Representatives for approval
“Your work is not yet over,” the MRAA said in an alert to members. “We still need more co-sponsors to get consideration in the senate.”
The MRAA is urging its members to send their senators an e-mail by going to www.boatblue.org.

There's never a shortage of storage space on the 230 Sundeck, thanks to a cavernous floor locker with gas-assisted lid and mildew-resistant vinyl matting, in addition to a huge compartment under the transom bench for wakeboards and water skis.
Based on a 21-degree deadrise hull and boasting a standard MerCruiser® 5.0L MPI Bravo® III sterndrive that delivers 260 horsepower (194 kW), the 230 Sundeck imparts the adrenaline rush of a zippy bowrider. Optional power ranges up to a fuel-injected MerCruiser® 6.2L MPI Bravo® III DTS (320 hp - 239 kW).

Mercury Marine Launches 15 hp Pro Kicker FourStroke
Mercury is launching their all-new 15 hp Pro Kicker FourStroke, utilizing a 2.15 gear ratio and four-blade, high-thrust propeller for greater maneuverability and low-speed handling that enables anglers to troll baits slower.According to Mercury Marine...
The 15 Pro Kicker is available in both tiller and remote control versions. They feature the fastest power tilt in its class – just three seconds to tilt up or down – and come equipped with patented kicker centering straps (optional on remote control models) that automatically straighten and secure the outboard when it’s completely tilted up.
The kicker straps, combined with the heavy-duty mid section and clamp brackets, make the Pro Kicker capable of handling even the roughest water. So when you’re ready to head to the fishing hole, or head home, your trolling motor won’t flop around like a fish out of water.

Malibu Boats Wakesetter 23 LSV wins award
Malibu Boats recently reported a 7th consecutive Boat of the Year Award from PowerBoat Magazine on May 3rd, in Los Angles, CA for the 2008 Wakesetter 23 LSV.
According to Malibu Boats...
The awards winners were selected after the magazine's rigorous Performance Trials in Parker, AZ, Sarasota, FL, and San Diego, CA. More than 40 performance boats were evaluated independently by two teams.
This year's PowerBoat Magazine Boat of the Year award was granted to Malibu Boats for the new 2008 Wakesetter 23 LSV.
This honor makes Malibu the only boat company in the history of PowerBoat Magazine to have earned seventh Boat of the Year awards in a row. Dan Gasper, Director of Research ad Development, accepted the award for Malibu Boats during the Product Excellence Celebration in LA.
Since its inception, the pride Malibu has taken in its products has netted recognition throughout the industry. The company has accumulated 18 Boat of the Year Awards and 25 Product Excellence awards. Yet, the restless spirit and motivation for perfection never stops.
Paul Singer, Vice-President of Sales of Marketing, explains this phenomenon. "I have said it before... These awards are a great pat on the back for us, but as soon as the high fives are spent, we get right back at it. There are so many more innovations that our engineers are working to perfect. They are competitive by nature and these awards just push them to develop that next industry first.

Hatteras 60 Convertible uses new hull technology for lower weight
The Hatteras website features details on the Hatteras 60 Convertible. The 60 Convertible features a mezzanine cockpit, lightweight construction, tumblehome curvature in the hullsides and a new tournament edition option.
According to Hatteras..
From the beginning of this model's design process, the Hatteras product development team has focused squarely on performance and fishability as top priorities.
As such, the new 60 Convertible represents a paradigm shift for the company. Built in Hatteras' new facility in Swansboro, North Carolina, the 60 will be one of the only fiberglass production boats to feature tumblehome in the hullsides. It will also be the first Hatteras to feature a completely resin-infused hull, rather than one built up of layers of hand-laid fiberglass.
The automated resin-infusion process produces a more uniform hull thickness from one hull to the next, as well as the most ideal glass-to-resin ratio. This one-two punch produces a boat that weighs significantly less because of the lowered resin content, while providing a more precise fit of bulkheads, stringers and other components for increased strength and durability.
