Monterey Boats 400 Sports Yacht with Volvo IPS

Monterey Boats recently unveiled its largest boat to date for the 2008 model year: the 400 Sport Yacht, powered with Volvo’s revolutionary Inboard Propulsion System (IPS).

According to Monterey Boats...

The 400 is one of the first models of any boat manufacturer to be designed around Volvo’s propulsion system. The 400SY is brimming with standard features and amenities.

Starting with the helm, you’ll notice a sophisticated grey gelcoated dash, complete with IPS joystick control. Ergonomically designed with full instrumentation and fog resistant gauges with low glare night lighting, the 400’s helm also has a striking black steering wheel with silver insert, electronic steering control and weatherproof, lighted switches.

The engine compartment is gel coated. The electrically actuated engine hatch is easily accessible, and leads you to lighting inside the engine compartment along with an automatic fire extinguisher system for added safety.

Continuing with the hull and deck you’ll find stainless steel hardware throughout; a foredeck sun pad with drink holders and grab rails; an extended swim platform complete with a telescoping recessed ladder, hatch, transom shower and walk thru door at the transom; a bondedin skylight with tempered tinted glass; and port/starboard windshield wipers.

Luxurious seating appointments and room for the entire crew starts in the cockpit.

This yacht also offers remote control access via the dash or aft remote for the premium stereo package with CD player and MP3 adaptor. And come nightfall, the entertaining can continue with overhead lighting mounted underneath the boats hard top.

Hatteras 60 Convertible uses new hull technology for lower weight

The Hatteras website features details on the Hatteras 60 Convertible. The 60 Convertible features a mezzanine cockpit, lightweight construction, tumblehome curvature in the hullsides and a new tournament edition option.

According to Hatteras..

From the beginning of this model's design process, the Hatteras product development team has focused squarely on performance and fishability as top priorities.

As such, the new 60 Convertible represents a paradigm shift for the company. Built in Hatteras' new facility in Swansboro, North Carolina, the 60 will be one of the only fiberglass production boats to feature tumblehome in the hullsides. It will also be the first Hatteras to feature a completely resin-infused hull, rather than one built up of layers of hand-laid fiberglass.

The automated resin-infusion process produces a more uniform hull thickness from one hull to the next, as well as the most ideal glass-to-resin ratio. This one-two punch produces a boat that weighs significantly less because of the lowered resin content, while providing a more precise fit of bulkheads, stringers and other components for increased strength and durability.

The Sabdes 50 - An environmentally conscious Superyacht

The Sabdes 50 Superyacht goes against the 'bigger is more impressive' yacht trend. From the slender 164 foot hull to the hybrid diesel-electric system, the Sabdes 50 is designed to be both luxurious and environmentally sensitive.

According to Sabdes Design...

The SABDES 50's dimensions are not extreme, by todays scale of Superyacht, but have been selected as they allow for an economic sized Superyacht, that reduces its impact on the environment, without sacrificing on style, safety, luxury, or performance.

Conceived by Australian Superyacht Stylist Scott Blee, the yacht is based around an advanced slender hullform with a reverse bow, offering superior seakeeping, minimised wave 'slamming', economical 25 knot performance, and long distance range. The hull design also will be optimised to have a minimal surface and hull wake, thus reducing its impact on sensitive marine life, as well as shoreline erosion.

The easily driven hull is propelled by a hybrid diesel-electric system, and offers a much higher cruise speed than an equivalent length displacement yacht. The propulsion system uses a shaft motor/generator designed to put surplus energy back into its battery banks. The yacht's total power consumption will be kept to a minimum by careful consideration of every technical element throughout; for instance, the vessel will have LED lighting, there will be more reliance on natural cooling to support the air conditioning system, and insulation and window materials are carefully selected. At anchor or in port, silent running can be achieved, by switching off the generators and running on the main battery banks. The vessel also has the ability to silently manouver in and out of harbour, by using its retractable bow and stern thrusters for propulsion.

Cummins MerCruiser Diesel Zeus Propulsion System to be intergral part of 2008 models

The Cummins MerCruiser Diesel (CMD) website reports that the Zeus Propulsion System will be an integral part of their propulsion line-up for the 2008 model year.

Cummins MerCruiser Diesel’s Zeus uses steerable pods, along with an advanced joystick control system, to deliver precise turning and tight maneuvering that is far superior to bow thrusters.

CMD’s Skyhook Electronic Anchor, a component of CMD’s highly advanced Precision Pilot system, keeps a Zeus equipped vessel on a fixed heading within a tight area, even in strong currents and windy conditions.

Unlike other pod systems, Zeus delivers an added level of safety with pods protected by tunnel mounting, rear-facing props and a breakaway skeg. Independent vectoring for each pod delivers dramatically improved high-speed handling, offering 15 percent faster top speed and up to 30 percent increased fuel economy at a higher cruise speed.

With up to 550 horsepower, Zeus offers more power density than comparable pod systems.Source: NauticalExpo, Cummins MerCruiser Diesel, and YouTube

Hatteras Yachts 56 Motor Yacht

Hatteras Yachts new 56 Motor Yacht is set to debut in the Spring 2008.

According to Hatteras, the 56 features a solid-fiberglass,like all Hatteras models. The hull bottom includes support for key areas such as the tunnels, shaft log and strut locations.

Divinycell coring is infused into the hull sides, decks and superstructure to add stiffness and reduce weight. The hull benefits from an advanced variable-deadrise design that utilizes large propeller tunnels to reduce draft and increase efficiency.

The 56 Motor Yacht features a pair of 705-hp Cummins QSM11s as standard equipment, installed in a V-drive configuration with the gearbox forward. This positions the engine room as far aft as possible and allows for more living space below.

The salon features a large sofa to port and smaller settee starboard. A 37-inch, flat-screen television is mounted under the galley countertop for easy viewing, and oversized frameless windows provide a panoramic view. A single step up leads to the galley and country kitchen forward.

A single athwartship fuel tank set forward of the engine room bulkhead eliminates the need for a fuel transfer system and helps distribute weight efficiently for improved performance. This fuel tank is located close to the center of buoyancy and keeps trim angle steady as fuel is consumed.

Down below, owners will enjoy a full-beam master stateroom with its tapered king-sized berth, vanity to starboard and large fixed portlights. Cedar-lined hanging lockers and twin dressers.

Lazzara Yacht's LSX Quad offers a preview of future boats

Soundings Magazine features a story on the Lazzara LSX Quad yacht and its new steering system. The 75-foot luxury express cruiser uses a revolutionary diesel inboard system with counter-rotating, forward-facing props and drive pods, giving precise control of the boat while docking with no use of bow or stern thrusters.

Driven by Volvo Penta’s new Inboard Performance System (IPS)600 engines, the LSX Quad's computer-controlled system replaces throttles and levers when steering. Lazzara Yacht's new system is a preview of how maneuverable and easy to use future boats will be.

The new system gives the LSX Quad the maneuverability of a boat half its size. Future advancements could link the IPS system to a GPS, keeping the boat on-course automatically through currents and wind.
